Dr. Faye Glenn AbdellahDr. Faye Glenn Abdellah is the first woman and the first nurse to hold the position of Deputy Surgeon General of the U.S. As the Chief Nurse Officer she holds the rank of Navy Rear Admiral as a member of the Commissioned Corps, U.S. Public Health Service. After receiving her R.N. Magna Cum Laude from Fitkin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1942, Dr. Abdellah earned a B.S., an M.A., and a Ed.D. in Education and Psychology from Columbia University.Among her many academic and professional awards are nine honorary degrees including a Doctor of Laws.(LL.D.) from Case Western Reserve University, Ohio, for "being a pioneer in nursing research and responsible for the advent of the nurse-scientist scholar", and LL.D. from Rutgers for "being a distinguished leader of the nursing profession and instrumental in improving nursing education and research". Dr. Abdellah's other honorary degrees are from the University of Akron, the Catholic University of America, Monmouth College, Eastern Michigan University, University of Bridgeport, and American University. In addition, Dr. Abdellah was presented the Nickolai Ivanovich Pirogov Medal from the USSR Academy of Sciences for "furthering US/USSR scientific contributions for the benefit of mankind". Dr. Abdellah has demonstrated the ability to foresee needs in the nursing and public health fields. In the 1950's she served as a principle investigator of progressive patient care which included setting up one of the first model intensive care and self-care units. In the 1960's she developed the first Federal Nurse Scientist Training Program in addition to participating in research projects on intensive coronary care and another on the first model emergency medical unit. In 1970 she was a member of the official Health Delegation to U.S.S.R. to work out policies and procedures for exchange programs for US/USSR scientists and health professionals. This visit resulted in the President signing an agreement to achieve this goal and the development of the first "hot line" with USSR to facilitate the exchange of scientific information. In 1978, Dr. Abdellah was a member of the National Council of Health Care Services on a visit to the People's Republic of China to study the care of the elderly and mentally retarded. In 1983, she served on the US Delegation to the 36th World Health Assembly in Geneva. Dr. Abdellah is listed in Who's Who of American Women and World Who's Who of Women.
