David Bailey LeeDavid Lee, class of 1962; grew up in Toms River where fifth generation ancestors distinguished themselves as patriots fighting for American Independence during the British attack on Toms River in 1782, when the British burned the Block House and left the village in ashes. He also descends from distinguished educators. His grandfather, Philip Sheridan Bailey, grandmother, Edith Imlay Bailey, and mother, Edith Bailey Lee, all taught in Toms River Schools.David graduated from Princeton University, Cum Laude, in 1966. His grandfather, Philip Bailey, was one of the first five graduates' of the Toms River High School in 1891. He was also a Charter Honoree of the Toms River Schools Hall of Fame. David now joins his grandfather in the same Hall of Fame. After graduating from Princeton, David enrolled in the U.S. Naval Officers Candidate School in Newport, R. I. where he was commissioned an Ensign in 1967. He then went on to the U.S. Navy Supply Corp School in Athens, Ga. He served aboard the destroyer USS Basilone (00-824), where he was promoted to Lieutenant, U.S. Navy Supply Corp during the Vietnam conflict and won commendation from the U.S. Sixth Fleet Commandant for Outstanding Performance in Maintaining Fleet Readiness. David is a member of the Navy League of the United States. David's father, Holman Lee, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and taught at Admiral Farragut Academy in Pine Beach, New Jersey. Leaving military service, David obtained his Masters in Business Administration with a Marketing Concentration from Harvard University in 1972. That same year he began his distinguished career at Readers Digest magazine as Magazine Circulation Manager, New Business. He continued to spiral up the corporate ladder after he left Readers Digest. He went on to Field and Stream; then ABC, Inc./ABC Publishing, where he increased magazine marketing profits by 103% in three years. As SeniorVice President for The Magazine Publishers of America (MPA), David successfully managed five industry committees, persuading the FAA to design airport concessions to display magazines in National Airports. He increased magazine sales at Wal-Mart by $250 million dollars. The MPA, where David worked for over nine years, is the national trade and marketing group for the multi-billion dollar consumer magazine industry, which includes Time Inc., Hearst, Reader's Digest and others. During his tenure at the MPA, David won numerous honors and awards, including the prestigious Lee C. Williams Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Periodical Publishing Field. David was founder/owner of Lee Associates, a consulting/mergers and acquisitions firm targeting the publishing industry, where he screened acquisition candidates for F&W Publishing Inc., the firm which he joined in 1991. F&W Publications is a leading national publisher of magazines and books on creative arts and crafts. Among its titles are Writer's Digest, Writer's Market, The Artist's Magazine, Popular Woodworking, Family Tree, and Memory Makers. He was promoted to Vice- President/Corporate Marketing in August 2001. The President and CEO of this company said, "David Lee is widely considered one of the magazine industry's leading experts on direct marketing, and we have the benefit of his talents in both magazines and clubs." David is not all work and no play. He is a qualified skipper for bareboat charters with experience sailing in the waters off the British Virgin Islands, St. Martin, Lake Champlain, Long Island Sound, Buzzard's Bay, Chesapeake Bay, and others. He is also a tennis enthusiast and an extensive hiker in the Appalachians from New England to Georgia. David's community service includes serving on the Board of Directors of the Cincinnati Nutrition Council, an organization which helps less fortunate citizens. He assisted his wife, Hallie Stephenson Lee, when she served as the first Executive Director of a relatively new program, Crayons to Computers, which channels private contributions of school supplies into public schools. It operates a supermarket-style free store for teachers. Teachers from low-income neighborhood schools receive priority invitations to visit the store and fill their classroom needs. David was instrumental in persuading F&W Publications to make large, continuing donations of art supplies and books to the Free Store. David Lee is president of the Ohio Valley Princeton Alumni Club and was recently elected to the Board and Executive Committee of the National Princeton Alumni Club. His wife, Hallie, who has a graduate degree from Harvard, has been President of Wellesley College Alumni Clubs in New York and Cincinnati. David is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Harvard Club of Cincinnati. David and Hallie have twins, Bailey Buford Lee and Stephenson Holman Lee. Even after all of these accomplishments, David says, "No matter where I live, Toms River will always be my hometown, and I recall my upbringing and education there with great fondness and appreciation."
