George Daniel Moore

Dan and his parents moved from Pennsylvania to Toms River in 1914. In the ensuing four years, he attended school in Toms River. Etheleen Longstreet, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988, was one of his favorite teachers. "She was firm, but fair."

Shortly thereafter he entered the job market and worked as a store clerk, a title searcher, postman and then over several years as an assistant traffic manager in the H. C. Glover Company on Robbins Street until his retirement.

For forty years, as a member of Toms River Fire Company #1, he listened for the fire whistle, day and night. It could be a house of a neighbor, a forest fire threat, a call to find a lost child, a service to help trim the town for Christmas, or just the Friday night whistle, a call for the regular meeting. He was also a member of the Island Heights Fire Company from 1932 - 1934.

In the early 1930's, when the first First Aid Squad was organized, Dan enlisted as a volunteer. The squad answered calls from Seaside to New Egypt and South of Lakewood to Tuckerton. It wasn't uncommon sometimes, after delivering the victim to the Paul Kimball Hospital, for the first aiders to donate blood by direct transfusion to the patient. Beside these activities, he taught First Aid and Fire Police Classes. The Boy Scouts will remember him as a Scout Leader in Island Heights and then as the leader of Troup #20 of the Baptist Church of Toms River. He led this troop to County Commissioner awards for four years. At the Jamborees in Colorado and Valley Forge he was an Assistant Scout Master of Physical Arrangements for the camps. He also taught Scout Masters Training Courses.

The Scout motto personifies Daniel Moore's dedication to the organization. "On my honor, I will do my best, to do my duty to God and my country and to help other people at all times."

The highest award of the Ocean County Council, the Silver Beaver Award, was given to him for his untiring efforts working with the Scouts. The Silver Beaver Award followed previous years of recognition in which he was awarded the Scouter's Award, Scouter's Key, small and large Bronze Statuettes, and a Silver Statuette.

Since 1972, Daniel has been an active member of the Ocean County Historical Society, during which time he has served on the executive board and with his wife, Margaret, taken over 18,000 school children on tours through the museum. Dan's membership in the First Presbyterian Church of Toms River has extended over 60 years. His many services to the church included serving as Financial Secretary.

Daniel Moore exemplifies those Hall of Famers who spent their lives giving of themselves to care for others while improving the quality of life in the Toms River area.
