Dr. Lewis Pyenson

Dr. Pyenson attended the Toms River Schools from Kindergarten through his graduation as Valedictorian in 1965.

After receiving a B.A. in honors physics from Swarthmore College, he continued his studies at the University of Wyoming earning a M.Sc. in theoretical physics in 1970. In 1974 he was awarded a PH.D. from John Hopkins University for his studies and research in the history of science.

In addition to his teaching career at the Universite de Montreal, Dr. Pyenson has also been a visiting fellow and professor at Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania, John Hopkins University, and the Universite Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France.

Among his most recent grants and awards from 1978 to 1990 are those to pursue study on Albert Einstein and Fritz Haber from the American Institute of Physics in New York, Imperialism and Exact Sciences from three organizations: Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council in Ottawa, the American Council of Learned Societies in New York, and the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia. In 1987 and 1988 he was honored by receiving awards as a "short term visitor" to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Pyenson's current professional activities include being a member of the History of Science Committee for the Quincentennial of the Discovery of America, an associate of the Center for the History of European Expansion (University of Leiden, Netherlands), member of the Board of Curators for the McGill University Osler Library for History of Medicine, member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Bibliopolis Press (Naples, Italy), and a founding member of the Latin American Society for the History of Science.

A prolific writer of reviews, articles, chapters of books, edited volumes, and translations, Dr. Pyenson has also written four books:

• Cultural Imperialism and Exact Sciences: German Expansion Overseas, 1900-1930
• The Young Einstein: The Advent of Relativity
• Neohumanism, and the Persistence of Pure Mathematics in Wilkelmean Germany

The Toms River Schools is proud to include Lewis Pyenson in their Hall of Fame for his dedication to teaching, his relentless pursuit of scientific history, and for his exemplary life as a scholar.
